The Small Things You've Been Ignoring
Who can access your banking, payroll, and email? Plus the Friday Five routine, when to replace aging computers, and why "it's been doing that for awhile" deserves attention.
Good morning! Technology problems rarely happen all at once. More often, they're the result of small things that have been ignored for weeks or months.
The good news? The opposite is also true. Small habits consistently practiced over time can dramatically improve your organization's security, productivity, and resilience. Let's get started.
☕ This Week in Technology
Microsoft's July security updates addressed hundreds of security vulnerabilities across Windows and related products. While the number itself can seem alarming, there's an important takeaway for business owners — software updates are one of the most effective security tools available to your organization.
If you've been postponing that restart or clicking “Remind Me Tomorrow” for the last three weeks, today might be a good day to finally click install.
🔒 Cyber Tip of the Week
Who can access our company's banking, payroll, and email systems?
If you don't immediately know the answer, make that a priority this week.
Former employees, shared passwords, and forgotten administrator accounts are often overlooked security risks. Spending fifteen minutes reviewing who has access to your critical systems can be time extremely well spent.
Sometimes cybersecurity isn't about buying something new — it's simply about knowing what you already have.
💼 Productivity Tip
Try adopting the “Friday Five.” Before leaving for the weekend, take five minutes to:
- Restart your computer.
- Close unnecessary browser tabs.
- Empty your Downloads folder.
- Review next week's top priorities.
- Install any pending updates.
You'll be surprised how much smoother Monday mornings become when you spend five intentional minutes preparing for them.
❓ Question of the Week
“Do we really need to replace computers every few years if they're still working?”
Maybe not — but “working” and “working well” aren't always the same thing. If employees are waiting an extra two minutes every day for applications to load, or dealing with intermittent problems that aren't severe enough to warrant a support ticket, that lost productivity adds up quickly.
Technology investments shouldn't be driven by age alone — they should be driven by business value.
🛠 From the Help Desk
One of the most common things we hear is: “It's been doing that for awhile.”
Slow startups. Strange pop-ups. Wi-Fi disconnects. Applications freezing occasionally.
Technology has a funny way of giving us small warnings before larger problems appear. If you've caught yourself saying, “It's been doing that for awhile,” it might be worth addressing before “awhile” becomes an outage.
